What’s the difference between Levi and Ylläs?
Both Levi and Ylläs are top destinations in Finnish Lapland, way above the Artic circle, but they offer different experiences:
Levi is Finland’s most popular ski resort, known for its lively après-ski scene, diverse restaurants, and activities. It has a well-developed infrastructure with a wide range of services. Levi is located in Sirkka village, Kittilä municipality, approximately 170 km (105 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. If you are flying to Kittilä Airport, Levi is just a 15-minute drive away.
Ylläs is more tranquil and nature-focused, home to Finland’s largest cross-country ski area and stunning wilderness. It’s ideal for those seeking outdoor adventures and peaceful surroundings. Ylläs is in Kolari municipality, about 150 km (93 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. If you are flying to Kittilä Airport, Ylläs is a 45-minute drive away. The area consists of two villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, with ample services, restaurants, tour operators and more.
What is the best time to visit Lapland?
Lapland is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.
- Winter (December–March) is ideal for experiencing the magic of the coldest season in Lapland. Think northern lights, husky and reindeer safaris, and skiing and other winter sports.
- Spring (April–May) offers long daylight hours and excellent skiing conditions.
- Summer (June–August) is perfect for experiencing the Midnight Sun, hiking, and fishing.
- Autumn (September–November) brings stunning fall colors (Ruska) and earliest chances to see the Northern Lights.
When can you see the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights can be seen as early as late August, becoming more frequent in late autumn and throughout winter.
The best chance to see them is on a clear, dark night, away from artificial lights – which there aren’t many to begin with here in Lapland!
How cold does it get in Lapland?
Lapland experiences cold winters, with temperatures ranging from -5°C to -30°C (23°F to -22°F). The coldest months are January and February, but the dry Arctic air makes the cold feel more bearable.
In summer, temperatures can range from +10°C to +25°C (50°F to 77°F).
When does the skiing season start?
Cross-country skiing starts in October using stored snow from the previous winter. More trails open as temperatures drop. Downhill skiing starts in October on the front slopes, also using stored snow. More slopes open as soon as it’s cold enough for snow cannons to operate. Skiing continues until May, with Levi’s front slopes staying open for the longest season in Finland!
