experience the wild
There are seven fells in the Pallas-Ylläs National Park area. At 718 meters, the Ylläs fell is one of the highest in Lapland. The area offers wonderful cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities. During the warmer months skiing trails transform into nature trails.
local delicacies
Diverse range of restaurants around Ylläs offer locally harvested and pure ingredients like wild herbs, berries and mushrooms. Fish and meat are preferably sourced directly from nature. You can even visit a wilderness café, located along popular trails and are easily accessible both in summer and winter.
magic in the sky
Travelers around the world have been mesmerized by the Northern Lights in Ylläs. We are located on the southern edge of the aurora oval that surrounds the North Pole. This means that the chances of seeing the Northern Lights here are very good during the period of dark nights, from August to April.
village way of life
The area consists of two original Lappish villages: Äkäslompolo lies on the northern side of the Ylläs Fell and Ylläsjärvi is on its southern side. A scenic road connects the two villages.
During Christmas, rows and rows of candles light up the villages and their snowy surroundings. Travel and tourism lives strongly in the area and the local people are genuine.
8 seasons of ylläs
Experience all the eight seasons and see a different side of Ylläs in each. Polar Night in December is followed by a long Midwinter. Early Spring still sees snow, but by Spring in May the greenery takes over. Nightless Nights of the summer season are followed by Harvest in August, Colors of the Fall in September and finally, First Snow in October.
history of The area
Inhabitancy in the area dates back to the year 1740. In the 1930s, Äkäslompolo was still a small village of 14 houses. Tourism was only starting out, and the first accommodation buildings were being built. Arriving to the village, the last 30km were skied and the goods were transported by horse or reindeer, until the road to the village was completed in the 1950s and a regular bus connection also began.
